For a subset of the reinsurers that Guy Carpenter follows, shareholders’ funds fell at a rate of 18.7 percent from the end of 2007 to the end of 2008. The most profound drop came in the third quarter of last year, in which hurricane losses pushed shareholders’ funds down 10 percent. Declines were not as severe in the fourth quarter, down only 4 percent.
(Note: for each quarter, we apply the exchange rate as of the end of the period.)
