Guy Carpenter Announces New Division and Senior Appointments Designed to Deliver Enhanced Client Value: Guy Carpenter today announced the formation of a new Global Capital Solutions Group and a series of new leadership appointments related to the Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (JLT) acquisition. These appointments will become effective upon closing of the transaction between Guy Carpenter’s parent company, Marsh & McLennan Companies, and JLT, which remains subject to the receipt of certain antitrust and financial regulatory approvals.

Excess and Surplus (E&S) Segment Outlook: The E&S lines segment of the insurance industry is an essential market for risks for which typically the standard insurance market does not offer coverage. The E&S market as a whole remained somewhat consistent and disciplined with its pricing and risk selection, with the first half of 2017 being very similar to 2016. Both primary and excess casualty rates were flat to up 5 to 10 percent depending on the line of business (LOB) and class. Specific areas, such as New York Construction and Transportation experienced double digit rate increases. Professional lines rates were overall flat.

New Approaches to Understanding and Modeling Cyber Risk

On October 21, 2016, a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) rendered a large number of the world’s most popular websites inaccessible to many users, including Twitter, Amazon, Netflix, and GitHub.

The internet outage conscripted vulnerable Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as routers, DVRs and CCTV cameras to overwhelm DNS provider Dyn, effectively hampering internet users’ ability to access websites across Europe and North America. The attack was carried out using an IoT botnet called Mirai, which works by continuously scanning for IoT devices with factory default user names and passwords. Continue reading…

Mw 6.7 Earthquake – Near Coquimbo, Chile

1_smallA magnitude (Mw) 6.7 earthquake was reported near Coquimbo, Chile around 01:32 UTC January 20, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located at a depth of 53 km (33 miles) and about 15 km (9 miles) SSW of Coquimbo, Chile, between the regions of Atacama and O’Higgins. Media reports to date indicate variable damage to property and infrastructure, although impacts appear to have been limited by the resilient building codes in the area. Some disruption to transportation has also been reported, along with some impacts to infrastructure and numerous power outages. Continue reading…
